Spatial Relationships

I have created this space as a place to share thoughts and ideas about ways to promote literacy in classrooms, at home, and in our communities.  If we are thoughtful, responsive, authentic and relevant in our teaching and learning practices, we can all add to the shining light of literacy.

It Begins
In late August, we were greeted by dark blue walls filled with bright lights and images beaming from Apple televisions that bounced knowledge like satellite signals from one person to another in a redesigned space (our school's new PD room).

My preoccupation with space continues...outer space, aerospace, backspace, crawlspace, airspace, spacecraft, inner space, spacesuit, letter space, headspace and cyberspace, etc.   So...welcome back to a new school year and what do most teachers do first? Organize their classroom spaces so that students are comfortable in their new learning environments!

A wonderful print resource for teachers is: Spaces and Places: Designing Classrooms for Literacy by Debbie Diller who uses pictures and texts to answer questions such as:

  • What do I really need in my room and what's the best way to set it up?
  • How does my physical classroom impact student learning?
  • Where do I put all the stuff I need to teach balanced literacy effectively?

Pinterest is another favorite resource for teachers and continues to supply us with great tips and ideas. Let's get started!

Shedding Light: I have always thought that the George H. W. Bush quote" a brilliant diversity spread like stars, like a thousand points of light in a broad and peaceful sky" epitomized the education profession even though he was talking about volunteer organizations and clubs.  Teachers keep the lamp of knowledge burning bright.
